The Islands and its People

The Archipelago of San Andres and Old Providence is a territory of the Republic of Colombia, located 120 miles off the east coast of Nicaragua and 400 miles off the northwest coast of Colombia's mainland.  It has an extension of 350 Km2 and is made up of 3 islands, some cays and banks.

The natives are Afro-Caribbeans, brought over as slaves from Africa by British and American slave holders to work on the cane and cotton fields of the Werstern Caribbean.  Some while abolitionists tought the liberated slaves to read and write and introduced them to the Christian faith.

The inhabitants of San Andres choose to affiliate themselves with the country of Colombia and are therefore Colombian citizens.
